My work with individuals and families involves helping to develop effective methods of managing challenging emotions, thoughts & behavior through the development of compassionate yet effective self-management skills. Parents are helped to strengthen their ability to predict difficult situations for their children and to structure the environment to minimize or eliminate problematic behaviors before they occur. De-escalation skills are also taught to manage situations in which challenging behavior was not able to be prevented so that individuals learn how to more effectively manage their own behavior. Interventions are practical and repeatable outside of sessions to help create relationships that incorporate safety, trustworthiness, collaboration and empowerment, both for adults and children.
I provide a compassionate, respectful, effective and non-judgmental approach to assisting children, adolescents and adults with a wide variety of problems. This includes help for anxiety, depression, substance abuse, loneliness, stress and school refusal; all of which have become increasingly associated with the increased use of digital devices and the rise in prevalence of ADHD.
My work with children involves partnering with parents to support them in their effort to promote self-confidence, respect, responsibility and a spirit of cooperation in their kids. In my work with adults, I offer a supportive environment in which to explore challenging relationships and situations with the goal of replacing costly coping methods with less-costly and more fulfilling strategies that lead to a life of greater joy and fulfillment.
With over 30 years of experience working with children & adults as a social worker, special education teacher, and substance abuse counselor, I utilize time-tested strategies & tools that are aimed at increasing parent/caregiver effectiveness and restoring peace & joy for individuals and families.
Counseling should be an empowering experience that does not need to be a continuously frightening & painful process. In fact, some of the most healing aspects of therapy occurs in the context of shared laughter about the situations we place ourselves in while trying to navigate challenges! When engaged in conversations & activities playfully, creativity is at its highest and problem solving is at its best.
